Two roads of memory
The Dark Refractory is a special access point that opens in Orbiter Navigation. On one side lies Descendia, where the Drifter descends into the Infernums of Roathe’s mind; on the other, the road where the Operator lives their Perita Rebellion memories of Tau.
The system cannot be simplified into a time machine and “they physically went to the past”. Memory, the Void and Albrecht’s technology combine to turn the past into an interactive battlefield.
The XX99 marker
Albrecht’s work in 1999, his later laboratories and his trail to Tau form a single route. The expression XX99 marks that temporal layer and the experimental ground he established in the past. With The Old Peace it becomes clear that Höllvania is not the final stop but a step in a plan reaching beyond the Origin System.
LIMIT OF CANON — The Dark Refractory is not currently a freely explorable star chart of Tau. It takes the player to Tau memories and to connected mental spaces. Until future content is announced, it should not be said that “Tau is fully open”.
The technology of memory
The Operator can carry their own suppressed war, the Drifter someone else’s hell. That division of labour sustains each character’s speciality: the Operator’s Tau past, and the Drifter’s experience of loops and of other minds.
What does the Refractory “refract”?
The word refractory evokes a material that bends and directs light or energy. Albrecht’s system likewise directs a memory into different minds and periods rather than replaying it as a flat record. The Operator connects to their own Tau past, the Drifter to Roathe’s Infernums. The same device turns two different subjects’ memories into separate arenas.
That technology is a combination of Transference, the Void and Albrecht’s research into time. The Vessels bonded to distant bodies, Duviri turned feeling into a country; the Dark Refractory turns memory into a front that can be entered again. Because the full technical schema is never explained, it is early to confine it to either simulation alone or literal physical time travel.
Why are the Operator and Drifter separated?
At Perita the Operator has their own suppressed bodily memory. The Focus schools and the Tauron Strikes connect directly to that past. The Drifter did not live that war; but they have experience of entering a closed reality built by another mind and of holding their bearings inside loops. That is why Descendia is given to them.
The division of labour keeps the two characters from being reduced to one person again. They share roots, yet one’s memory is not automatically copied to the other. They complete each other’s gaps through different experience.
The route from XX99 to Tau
In 1999 Albrecht hid in the past, prepared Protoframes and a loop that could be changed. In The Old Peace his trail reaches the Tau memories outside the Origin System. The Dark Refractory is the navigational layer between those two ends. The “XX99” marker suggests the earlier work is not finished but bound to a larger route.
What the player can reach at present is memories and layers of mind. Freely travelling all the planets of Tau is not yet possible. This site will preserve that technical distinction until a new official quest arrives.
What did we learn in this chapter?
The Dark Refractory shows Albrecht used time not only for travel but to turn memory into a battlefield. In the final chapter we clarify what “the road to Tau” actually means today.
