The Orokin–Sentient Peace

The limit of a peace

In most accounts the relationship between the Orokin and the Sentients jumps straight from creation to the Old War. The Old Peace shows there were negotiations, attempts at coexistence and temporary arrangements at the front in between. But the parties never met on equal terms.

The Orokin still saw the Sentients as created property and Tau as a resource promised to them. For the Sentients, Tau was home. Without resolving that fundamental contradiction, every peace signed became an interval granted to war.

What it cost the Dax and the Tenno

While rulers discussed peace, Dax and Tenno fought at the border. Changing orders did not erase their trauma. The appearance of the Anarch Dax suggests some warriors saw that preserving the Orokin order was not the same as preserving peace.

CANON NOTE — Although the update opened the memories and consequences of that peace, it does not give every diplomatic clause in a single text. Here, confirmed events and political inference are kept apart.

The peace’s collapse again demonstrates the unsustainability of Orokin domination rather than any innate Sentient evil. What the Operator suppressed is not only the violence of a war but their doubt about the order they were defending.

What each side expected from peace

For the Orokin, peace was an instrument to secure access to Tau and the continuation of imperial order. For the Sentients it was the possibility of their homeland being recognised and of having a say in their own future. With those different aims loaded onto the same word and never resolved, no agreement could last.

The Orokin’s fundamental problem was refusing to count the Sentients as equal political subjects. As long as they were seen as machines the empire had produced, any right granted could be withdrawn and any word about Tau treated as provisional. On the Sentient side, the distrust Hunhow and the war generation felt towards the Origin System made every concession look like preparation for a new assault.

Where did the Tenno stand?

The Tenno were the Orokin’s most powerful instrument of war, yet their childhoods and their Void powers kept them from being fully part of the ruling order. The Sentients counted them an existential threat; the Orokin saw them as an indispensable but dangerous weapon. Even while peace talks continued, there was no open guarantee of an independent Tenno future.

The Operator’s suppression of their Tau memories can be read alongside that double alienation. For someone who fought for the Orokin, saw the Sentient homeland and witnessed a Dax rebellion, the border between “us” and “the enemy” collapses. But because it is never fully explained which part of the memories was suppressed by whom, no firm verdict about intent should be given.

The lesson left by the collapse

That the Old Peace failed does not make the idea of peace meaningless. On the contrary, it shows why a truce made without equality is not enough. If the Tenno one day go to Tau, they will have to recognise the Sentients as subjects of that homeland rather than claim ownership as the Orokin did.

Lotus, or Natah, is the living bridge of that possibility. She carries a Sentient origin and a Tenno family in one person. Her existence shows the two sides need not remain enemies forever — and that the bond must be built by choice rather than by force.

What did we learn in this chapter?

The Old Peace was no lasting settlement but a fragile period built on unresolved inequality. The next chapter ties that past to the three Protoframes who carry it in Roathe’s mind: the Devil’s Triad.
