Margulis and the Zariman Children

The protector

Margulis’s relationship with the Tenno was never simply that of scientist and subject. She offered the children calm, trust and a method for directing their powers. That is how the idea developed of keeping their bodies safe in the Reservoir while sending their minds elsewhere through a “dream”.

This work became the foundation of Transference. Its original purpose was not to manufacture soldiers but to let the children cope with their own power.

The dream born as treatment

Margulis kept the children’s bodies in a calm, safe place while directing their minds into a different experience. The “dream” was not a way of moving them away from Void energy but a means of living with it without discharging it through their bodies. Somatic apparatus balanced heartbeat, consciousness and the flow of energy.

Why Transference worked so extraordinarily well with Warframes was not understood at first. Although the Tenno could affect other machines too, they formed a particular harmony with the suppressed pain inside a Warframe body. Because the children recognised their own trauma, they could calm the rage of those bodies rather than merely commanding it.

Being blinded did not end the relationship either. When a burst of Tenno power burned out her eyes, Margulis went on protecting the children instead of blaming them. In Orokin eyes that compassion was a loss of scientific detachment; for the children it was the first time an adult had stayed beside them despite fear.

Judgement

The Orokin rulers found the Tenno useful but dangerous. When Margulis opposed the destruction of the children she challenged not a point of law but absolute power. However much Ballas claimed to love her, he did not shield her from the empire’s verdict.

Margulis was executed by Jade Light.

Ballas’s choice

Ballas was in a position to save Margulis during the trial, yet he never openly opposed the Orokin order. Later he justified his betrayal by holding the empire responsible for her death. That is a convenient account which erases his own part. He left the woman he claimed to love alone before authority, and then used her memory to control other people.

The difference between Margulis’s love for the Tenno and Ballas’s possessiveness towards Margulis reaches all the way to The New War. Margulis wants to let the children be themselves. Ballas forces Natah into Margulis’s shape, belittles the Lotus identity, and in the end expects the whole Origin System to worship him.

Margulis is therefore not only a tragic character who died in the past. Her understanding of compassion is the exact opposite of the Narmer order Ballas built.

CANON NOTE — Reading all of Ballas’s later actions as the behaviour of a grieving lover is incomplete. His love is bound up with possession, rage and a hunger for control.

The face left behind

Margulis’s death was a second abandonment for the Tenno. For Ballas it became the excuse for his hatred of the Orokin; for Natah, the shape of the motherhood she would later assume. Lotus’s voice and appearance would evoke Margulis — but Lotus is not a reborn Margulis.

Her system of treatment did not disappear either. The Orokin attached it to the Warframe project. When the children’s dream met the pain of Infested war bodies, the empire’s most powerful soldiers emerged.

Why did Lotus wear her face?

Natah taking Margulis’s appearance cannot be read as physical imitation alone. The Sentient mission required winning the Tenno’s trust, and Margulis’s face was a powerful instrument for that. But the more Natah chose to protect the children, the more the role she had assumed became a real bond, and the Lotus identity was born.

Lotus is not Margulis returned. She carries Natah’s past, the model of motherhood she learned from Margulis, and her own decisions all at once. That the player can choose between the names Natah, Lotus and Margulis at the end of The New War shows those layers; whichever name is chosen, the person making the decision is now herself.

Margulis’s legacy therefore lives not in a body or a name but in a way of seeing that counts the Tenno as people rather than instruments.

What did we learn in this chapter?

Margulis was not the person who turned the Tenno into weapons but the one who tried to protect them from that fate. Her death prepared both Ballas’s betrayal and the motherhood Lotus would later choose. Next comes the true origin of the Warframe bodies.
