An intermediate form of transformation

The Protoframe is an earlier form of Warframe technology that visibly preserves human identity. Albrecht applies Helminth serums associated with future Warframe strains to people in 1999. Arthur gains Excalibur’s powers, Aoi Mag’s, Amir Volt’s, Lettie Trinity’s and Eleanor Nyx’s; Quincy is tied to the Cyte-09 line.

Their skin and organs change and extraordinary abilities emerge; even so they keep their faces, their voices and their memories. The transformation has not suppressed personality the way finished Warframe production does.

Rescue or experiment?

The serums offer a chance of survival against outbreak and death. At the same time, Albrecht turns people into instruments of his greater plan without their fully informed consent. The Hex’s gratitude and their hatred both come from that duality.

CANON NOTE — The word “proto” does not mean merely a crude, feeble prototype. The Hex are fully realised people and extremely powerful; what differs is their historical and biological position.

The Gemini distinction

The Gemini Skin is a cosmetic and gameplay presentation letting a player switch between a Warframe’s appearance and a related Protoframe appearance. In the story it does not mean a real Protoframe is imprisoned inside a present-day Warframe.

How much humanity is kept?

Protoframes speak, eat, send messages, form romantic bonds and remember their pasts. Warframe power may be written into their bodies, but their personalities remain their own. Eleanor’s mental communication or Amir’s speed intensify their character traits rather than erasing them.

That does not make the transformation risk-free. Proximity to the Techrot, loss of control over the body and the long-term effects of Albrecht’s serum all create fear in the team. Protoframes are not “broken because half-transformed”; they are anxious because they do not know whether the transformation will continue.

The relationship to future Warframes

Arthur’s resemblance to Excalibur does not automatically prove he is the single historical first body of the Excalibur we know. With Helminth knowledge carried from the future, Albrecht produced similar combat lines in the past. Eternalism and time travel complicate the linear “prototype first, model later” relationship here.

New Protoframes — Flare, Minerva, Velimir and Kaya — show the concept is not exclusive to the Hex. With the right serum and conditions, people corresponding to different Warframe lines can be transformed. Inventing a name as though every Warframe had a Protoframe shown in 1999, however, is not canon.

The Gemini system carries these people into present-day missions cosmetically and gives them voiced reactions. Whether that is literal time travel or a layer of presentation is never explained in full; the safe distinction is not to confuse the real Protoframe character with the Gemini appearance a player uses.

The ethical question of the Protoframes

The serum may have saved people from death; that does not settle the problem of informed consent. Knowing the outcome, Albrecht does not share every risk. Nor does the Hex enjoying or using their powers make the procedure retroactively ethical.

For a player who knows the human origin of the Warframe project, 1999 offers an important comparison. Because Protoframes can speak, the personal cost of transformation is visible. Looking afterwards at the silent Warframe bodies of the future, the possibility of lost voices is felt far more strongly.

What did we learn in this chapter?

The Protoframes show the missing link between human and Warframe and throw new light on the origin of the Warframe project. Facing that transformation is an uncontrolled Infestation fused with technology: the Techrot.
