The past of the future
Höllvania is an alternative Earth city in 1999, long before the present-day Origin System, where computer networks, motorcycles, shopping malls and analogue communication all exist together. It is not our world matched detail for detail; it is a slice of the human civilisation that will become Warframe’s future.
As the Techrot outbreak fuses machines, cables and flesh, the city is put under quarantine. The streets empty of civilians and the underground tunnels fill with Infested-like beings. The Central Mall becomes the Hex’s base and the last memory of a normal life now lost.
The Scaldra order
Scaldra is the military force raised against the outbreak. It uses a chemical called Efervon and clears districts with heavy armour and industrial weapons. But its methods turn from protecting civilians to controlling them. Major Neci Rusalka and Viktor Vodyanoi represent the authoritarian faces of crisis management.
CANON NOTE — Scaldra and the Techrot are not allies. They are two different threats facing the Hex: one an outbreak, the other a military order that disregards human life in fighting it.
The last night
Albrecht’s arrival, the Protoframe experiments and the threat of a nuclear reactor take 31 December out of ordinary history. When the night ends in failure, time begins again. Höllvania becomes a more human and more merciless version of the loop the Drifter knew in Duviri.
The city’s everyday culture
Höllvania is not made of combat corridors alone. The shops in the Central Mall, the POM-2 computers, KIM messaging, music cassettes and Atomicycle culture keep the life before the outbreak in view. When Hex conversations range from favourite foods to old relationships, the city stops being scenery and becomes a home about to be lost.
On-lyne’s popularity and Flare’s music show that the people of 1999 went on making entertainment even in a crisis. That the Techrot later turn those recordings into Coda copies is particularly disturbing; the outbreak seizes not only bodies but shared culture and memory.
The order of Rusalka and Viktor
Major Neci Rusalka represents the authority of the quarantine in public. Viktor Vodyanoi applies its scientific and industrial violence; tanks, Efervon and experiments are his front. Among the Scaldra soldiers are not only malicious caricatures but people frightened of the outbreak who follow orders. The institution’s problem is that it turns that fear into unlimited power.
The link between Rusalka’s appearance and The Indifference raises the question of how much of her is her own will. Because the current text does not answer everything, it is too early either to write her off as “it was the Man in the Wall” or to treat her as entirely independent.
Saving Höllvania is not completed by killing one boss. The Techrot stay in the infrastructure, Scaldra forces remain, and the link across time keeps the city open to future conflicts. The Hex finale saves living people; the city’s long recovery begins after that.
The connection to the Origin System
At first glance 1999 looks like a separate game universe, yet it carries the roots of the future’s language, technology and biology. The Technocyte outbreak reaches to the Infestation, the Protoframes to the Warframe lines, the Entrati name to the scientific family of the Orokin age. The Drifter’s arrival binds the two periods directly into one chronology.
The people and cultural records taken from Höllvania live on in future Gemini appearances, Coda enemies and Albrecht’s plan. The city is not unimportant for lying in the past; it makes visible the human age the Origin System forgot.
What did we learn in this chapter?
Höllvania is no nostalgic set dressing but the lost past of Warframe’s future and the testing ground of the Kalymos Sequence. In the next chapter we meet, one by one, the six Protoframes trying to save it.
