Turning on their creators

When the Sentients returned to the Origin System to defend Tau, the Orokin saw it as a revolt of their property. So began the conflict later called the Old War. Its name says “old”, yet almost every political and personal wound in today’s Warframe world begins there.

The Orokin held the superior technology. But the Sentients learned as they were attacked, developed resistance to the same damage and could seize the enemy’s machines. The empire’s most advanced weapons soon turned against it.

An empire losing while winning

The Orokin fell back on older, cruder weapons; they threw their Dax armies, their biological experiments and countless soldiers at the front. Still Sentient adaptation held. The war drained the empire’s resources and its authority from within.

In the war’s first period, Orokin superiority was also Orokin weakness. Networked smart weapons and automatic defences could be understood by the Sentients, captured or neutralised. The empire therefore went back to the ballistic weapons and biological methods of war it considered more “primitive”. The rise of Grineer soldiers accelerated out of the same need: flawed clones looked more trustworthy than complex machines waiting to be seized.

The fronts did not advance in space alone. Lua and the Orokin centres came under direct threat; Erra’s assault on the Moon showed that the war had reached the empire’s heart. As Sentient units were broken apart they could split into smaller warriors rather than being destroyed outright, so that no single victory ever ended the threat.

CANON NOTE — The Old War is not one pitched battle over Tau. It is a whole body of conflicts spread between Tau and the Origin System, with different fronts and long periods.

Ballas’s betrayal grew in that soil. Holding the Orokin responsible for Margulis’s death, the Executor shared intelligence with the Sentients and weakened his own empire’s defences.

Ballas’s double game

As architect of the Warframe project, Ballas held the Orokin’s most critical secrets. His deal with the Sentients was not only revenge; it was an investment in power that would carry his own importance past the end of the war. By passing on what he knew about Warframe weaknesses and the structure of the Tenno system, he left the Orokin defenceless from the inside.

The Sentient plan involved more than brute force as well. Hunhow’s daughter Natah was to infiltrate the Tenno, win their trust and see to it that they destroyed the Orokin leadership at the end of the war. Her final order was to wipe out the Reservoir and so end the Tenno threat entirely. Natah’s refusal of that final order would become the Old War’s uncalculated fracture.

No side here consists of a single will. Ballas is Orokin and betrays the Orokin; Natah arrives on a Sentient mission but chooses against her Sentient family; the Tenno fight as the empire’s weapon and finally turn on their masters. What makes the Old War matter is that its fronts run not only between species but through every character.

The children of the Void

What the Sentients could not overcome was the Void. The return from Tau had already wounded them; Void energy was the blind spot of their adaptation. The Orokin had at hand a group who carried that power naturally: the children who survived the Zariman accident.

The children were not warriors; their power was uncontrolled and their trauma ran deep. The way to bring them into the war would be to bind their minds to biological war bodies that lived in pain. So the partnership of Tenno and Warframe changed the fate of the Old War.

The real cost of victory

Once the Tenno entered the front, Sentient adaptive superiority broke. Warframe bodies could use both old and new weapons, while the Void power flowing from the Operator disrupted Sentient defences directly. The Orokin presented this success as proof of their own genius; in truth the victory was made possible by mercy shown to one another by the children they had traumatised and the bodies they had transformed by torture.

At the war’s end the Origin System looked saved, yet the old order could not return. Millions had died, rule had weakened, and the Tenno had seen what the Orokin really were. The attack that came on the night of the Naga Drums was therefore no sudden change of heart but the outcome of betrayals accumulated across the whole war.

What did we learn in this chapter?

The Sentients returned to the Origin System not as an army of conquest but as a people determined to defend Tau. The Orokin answer was to turn the children of the Zariman into weapons. Now we go back to the lost ship that carried those children.
