The darkness inside the light

The Origin System was not always divided between rusting Grineer ships and Corpus factories. The Solar Rail lines binding the planets together, the flawless white towers and the living biotechnology all answered to the will of a single empire. That period would later be called the Golden Age.

Gold was not merely an ornament applied to buildings. It was the mask the Orokin order chose for itself.

NARRATIVE — On the highest floors of the towers, death had been defeated. At the very bottom, millions laboured for someone else’s immortality.

Today the word “Orokin” is often used for the whole of that ancient civilisation. In truth the Orokin were the narrow, privileged class at the summit of society. Rulers, Executors and elite families considered themselves the natural masters of humanity. Their scientists were Archimedeans, their warriors Dax, and the genetic slaves worked to exhaustion would become the class later known as the Grineer.

Flawless bodies, stolen lives

For the Orokin elite, ageing was a technical problem already solved. Continuity allowed a mind to be transferred into another body. That immortality created no new body, however; it took the body of a living person. The Yuvan markets were part of the merciless order in which the elite selected their next form.

The law was just as absolute and just as ostentatious. Jade Light could erase a person entirely, while the punishments known as “glassing” could turn a consciousness into a Cephalon and condemn it to endless service. Dax obedience was not only a tradition; the inability to defy an Orokin master was written into their bodies.

CANON NOTE — Orokin technology was extraordinary, but its prosperity was not evenly shared. The empire’s scientific progress and its social justice were never the same thing.

The machines of the Golden Age

This civilisation reshaped planets, redesigned biological life and built roads that shortened the distance between stars. The Relics still in use today, the Prime weapons, the Void towers and the Solar Rail networks are all fragments of that era.

Yet the Orokin’s greatest talent was also their greatest flaw: that they could do a thing meant, to them, that they had the right to do it.

They bred the Grineer as workers. They experimented with Technocyte. They made the Dax obedient. And when they had exhausted their resources, rather than question their own order, they turned their eyes to another star system.

Why was the Origin System not enough?

As the empire grew, population, consumption and the unending demands of the elite pressed hard on the Origin System. For the Orokin the solution was not to live more modestly. It was to find new worlds and bend those to their order as well.

The target lay far beyond the Origin System: Tau.

That decision did not begin a single colonisation project. It opened the door to three linked catastrophes:

  • the research that would make the Void usable for travel,
  • the adaptive machines to be sent ahead to transform Tau,
  • and the Zariman Ten Zero, which would carry thousands of people to the new system.

Everything that brought about the end of the Golden Age would first be presented as its greatest achievement.

What did we learn in this chapter?

The Orokin Empire was no flawless civilisation of the past. Its magnificent science existed alongside body theft, genetic slavery and a rigid class order. The decision to reach for Tau arose less from a desire to explore the unknown than from the need to expand an unsustainable empire.

In the next chapter we turn to the scientist who opened the door between the stars for that empire: Albrecht Entrati.
