The body of the mother

Beside Erra, Natah comes face to face with Praghasa’s vast Sentient structure. “Mother” is at once a family bond and a ship large enough to consume stars. Natah’s return is treated as the energy that will complete Praghasa and the coming assault.

Natah regards Ballas’s chained appearance and Erra’s account with suspicion. Erra forces her towards the control console; the family reunion is no free reunion but a coercion into obedience.

The mask falls

At the end of the scene, Ballas lets the leash fall from his hand. Erra watches him; the apparent order of slave and master is inverted. That is the real information delivered before The New War begins: Ballas is not outside the plan but at its centre.

CANON NOTE — The word “Maker” points to Ballas’s creative role in the Warframe and Sentient designs, and equally to how he sees himself: as the man who shapes other people’s fates.

Natah’s power will be used, the Sentient fleet will attack, and Ballas will instrumentalise both sides in order to found a new order.

Why does Praghasa matter?

Praghasa is named as Hunhow’s mate and the mother of Natah and Erra; she is also a vast Sentient ship able to consume energy on a stellar scale. Her turn towards the Sun in The New War becomes a threat capable of destroying the whole Origin System. That her seemingly inert body in The Maker regains function through Natah’s energy explains why the daughter is forcibly bound to that structure.

However unlike human biology the Sentient language of family may be, it is emotionally real. The word “mother” stands both for the being that produced them and for a shared homeland. Erra uses that bond to tell Natah that the Tenno are temporary and the Sentient line is her essential family. Natah’s objection shows that chosen bonds are no less real than the ones you are born into.

Why is Ballas the Maker?

Ballas is the Executor who shaped the Warframe project and the man who passed secrets to the Sentients during the war. He sees himself as the perpetual centre that creates others, renames them and decides their fates. He dresses Natah in Margulis’s memory, makes Warframe bodies out of human beings, and turns Erra’s war into Narmer.

The name “Maker” therefore means more than a technical producer; it is Ballas’s claim of ownership. The moment he removes his leash and stands, the audience sees he was playing the slave. Natah still cannot reach the whole truth. At the opening of The New War, Ballas’s greatest advantage is not troop numbers but that he writes the story of who is playing which role.

Why is Natah’s will weakening?

Lotus had once been able to choose her own identity; during The Maker her memory, her body and her family’s pressure are targeted at once. Being bound to Praghasa drains her power, Erra reinterprets her past, Ballas uses the shape of Margulis. What is announced as “Natah has returned” is in fact the narrowing of her room to decide.

Lotus’s choice of a name at the end of The New War is the inverse of this scene. In The Maker everyone tells her who she is; in the finale, once Ballas is silenced, she decides for herself how her identity is presented. Read together, the two moments show the war is as much about personal autonomy as it is about arms.

What did we learn in this chapter?

The Maker is a short but decisive bridge: Erra’s language of family turns into coercion, and Ballas’s captivity into power. For the Tenno to reach that fleet, though, they must first rebuild an ancient Orokin warship.
