Chimera Prologue

After being abandoned

Once Lotus leaves with Ballas during Apostasy Prologue, the Operator follows her trail. In Chimera Prologue, Ballas now has a half-Sentient body; he appears chained, wounded and held captive by Natah.

He tells the Tenno that Natah has returned to her Sentient identity and is preparing for war on humanity. As the answer he hands over the blueprint for the Paracesis, a heavy blade designed to kill Sentients.

An unreliable victim

What Ballas says is not wholly invented; but the frame he puts around it is manipulation. He presents himself as a powerless victim and Natah as an executioner with a single will. The New War will reveal that the balance of power between them is very different from how it looks.

CANON NOTE — Ballas’s words are characterisation, not evidence. In the Warframe story his monologues in particular should be read as concealing his intent.

The Paracesis is not merely a new weapon but a symbol of the coming war. As the Tenno prepare to rescue Lotus, they are in fact entering the wider game Ballas has set up.

From Apostasy to Chimera

Ballas’s reappearance begins with Apostasy Prologue. Coming into Lotus’s private chamber, he calls her by the name Margulis and leads her away in front of the Tenno. The scene leaves open the question of whether Lotus left willingly or under his mental influence. Her return to Natah’s appearance during The Sacrifice deepens the Tenno’s sense of having lost their mother.

The half-Sentient body seen in Chimera shows how Ballas was “repaired” on Erra’s side after Umbra’s attack. He presents himself as humiliated and in chains. But his language remains directive: he converts the Tenno’s worry for Lotus into fear of Natah, and their wish to rescue her into an order to prepare for war.

The message the Paracesis carries

The Paracesis is designed as a “Sentient killer” and later appears in Ballas’s own hand at the most critical moments of The New War. Giving it to the Tenno is Ballas having them carry his future weapon to the scene where he will use it. Building it from Eidolon Shards and Orokin resources unites the Sentient and Orokin inheritances in a single blade.

Ballas’s real purpose is not explained at this point; a good account reads his words backwards from later knowledge. That he drops his leash in the Erra scene and rules Narmer in The New War exposes the helplessness of Chimera as a performance. The tension of this chapter is less “is Ballas telling the truth?” than “into which lie is he fitting the true pieces?”

The Tenno’s emotional blind spot

Because the Operator wants Lotus back, they are inclined to believe the account Ballas offers. Accepting the Paracesis plan need not mean they truly regard Natah as an enemy; they follow the only lead they have towards a lost mother. That desperation is exactly what Ballas uses.

Chimera matters not for any great battle scene but for corrupting the reliability of information. From here on, the player questions whether the chain they see is a real chain and the confession they hear a real confession. When Ballas’s order is revealed in The New War, this short scene acquires all of its meaning in retrospect.

What did we learn in this chapter?

Chimera Prologue brings Ballas back on stage in the guise of a victim and arms the Tenno against Natah. In the next chapter Natah’s brother Erra appears, and the reliability of the past grows murkier still.
