A refuge in the calendar

Albrecht travelled into the past by way of the Strands of Khra and worked in the Höllvania of 1999 under the name Dr Entrati. That date is a powerful knot in time: the threshold of the technological age, the social tension of the Y2K fear, and the closing moment of a year.

The Indifference was following him. Hiding in the past, Albrecht was not merely fleeing; he was preparing conditions that would limit his enemy’s reach, and a loop in which the Drifter could intervene in the future.

The Protoframe experiment

He gave Arthur, Aoi, Amir, Lettie, Quincy and Eleanor Helminth strains associated with future Warframes. Gaining combat power without wholly losing their humanity, they became Protoframes. Albrecht saved them, used them, and left them inside a great danger — all three are true at once.

CANON NOTE — It is wrong to assume Albrecht calculated every step perfectly in advance. The Hex openly questions his mistakes and his instrumentalising of people.

The last night

The reactor disaster on New Year’s Eve locks Höllvania and the timeline. In the first outcome Albrecht cannot save the Hex; the Drifter’s experience of loops and the bonds they build with the team create a new possibility. So the choice of 1999 becomes the laboratory in which feeling is tested against The Indifference.

Dr Entrati in 1999

Albrecht does not walk around Höllvania in the clothes of the future; he settles inside the local science and outbreak crisis as Dr Entrati. Having advance knowledge of the Techrot makes him look like a saviour. The serums he gives Arthur and the others offer escape from death, but none of them fully knows the long-term consequence of the transformation.

His relationship with Rusalka and the Scaldra is not simple enmity either. Albrecht uses the resources of different institutions for his own plan in time, then disappears when the city goes into crisis. The Hex’s anger at him is therefore justified: the man who saved their lives also left them inside a war he never explained.

Why is Y2K a powerful knot?

The passage from 1999 to 2000 is charged, in Höllvania’s society, with the fear that computers will fail and order will end. Millions loading meaning onto the same moment creates a powerful conceptual focus for Void and time technology. The reactor threat combines that collective fear with the possibility of physical catastrophe.

The date Albrecht chose is therefore not random nostalgia. The calendar’s “end” can be an entrance for The Indifference and, for the Drifter, a door of loops and change. As a fairy tale became a shared feeling in Duviri, so social expectation shapes time in Höllvania.

It cannot be said that Albrecht controlled every detail of the plan perfectly. The first ending closes with the death of the Hex. The solution the Drifter finds through relationships goes beyond the conditions the scientist prepared and makes 1999 genuinely saveable.

The Drifter’s answer to Albrecht

When the Drifter finds Albrecht they do not become his unconditional student. They have already left a role written by another ruler in Duviri, and so object earlier to people being sacrificed in the name of a “greater plan”. The decision to save the Hex changes Albrecht’s method without rejecting his objective.

The relationship between the two carries tension into the future as well. Albrecht is indispensable for his knowledge of time and of Tau; the Drifter is the one who can see the human outcome of the plan. Without the first, the road cannot be found; without the second, there may be no one left to save at the end of it.

What did we learn in this chapter?

Albrecht went to 1999 not only to hide but to prepare an ending that could be changed. What sets the final crossing in motion, though, will be a single call Lotus hears.
